Cai Xiang, Inside the Scherm, 2018, Acrylic on canvas, 40 x 60 cm

In the current world, our daily life is constantly faced with choices between certain “stuff”, and any specific stuff reflects a corresponding lifestyle and living condition. We would like to discuss on this issue in the status which is seemingly pluralistic yet has a force of unification.

Yang Xiaoqing, The White Experience of Broken Things, 2018, Ceramic device, 60 x 80 cm

Japanese cultural critic Hiroki Azuma proposed the concept of a postmodern model of consumption – “database consumption”- in his writing Dobutsuka-suru Postmodern (Animalizing Postmodernity). As modern unitary macro-narration shifts to fragmentary micro-narration, each and every superficial micro-narration is a window onto an extensive database in the underlying structure which is accompanied by the rendering of a certain lifestyle and collective identity. And a lifestyle is necessarily embodied in the form of “stuff” as says in the advertisements “Our products will make your life better.”

On the other hand, “simulation” blurs the boundaries between so-called originals and reproductions. Reproductions and derivative works based on the originals are more like retrieval of materials from the database. Any method conforming to this creative thinking could be accepted and possibly obtain the same value with the originals.

Luo Kai, Body Technique – Diving, 2019, Acrylic on canvas, 120 x 180 cm

Zhou Zizheng, Uncertain White Triangular Prism, 2018, Glass fibre, 90 × 50 × 43 cm

Based on the two points, we present the five artists’ works along with a rage of ready-mades characteristically connected to each work. This is an attempt to explore living conditions of diversity reflected by new possibilities of artistic creation involving with settled daily objects.

Wang Jiale, Endless Sorrow, 2019, Comprehensive material: magnet, iron powder, lipstick powder blue, 23 x 23 x 62 cm
