“Time As A Narrator” curated by Shi Yuling opened on November 26th at Hall C of Museum of Contemporary Art Chengdu. The exhibition, which presents artist Shen Yangchao’s recent works, including video, photography, installation and mixed media, revolves its discussion around the concept of “time”, or takes time as a vessel of the artistic narratives, or treats time as a narrative subject, representing the texture of time before the camera while bringing individual experiences of time to the public sphere so as to establish a sense of empathy with viewers.

“‘Time’ is both a irrevocable factor in the act of narration, and the narrative subject utilized by creators to connect public experience. Therefore, as receivers, we are often used to experiencing the texture of time in visual art, or else we encounter the creator in our individual experience of time and sympathize with one another. As for experience of the previous kind, we have undoubtedly caught it in Shen Yangchao’s works such as Marble and Light, Landscape, Water Waves, Light on Water Waves, and The Rain Maker. Time leaps and mobilizes among the waves, light, landscape and flying geese; time turns fast and slow every now and then during improvised dances of the rain maker and among the grazing cattle.”

“In his works such as Don’t Just Stare at The Clock, It Will Suck out Your Soul, The Last Ritual, Happiness, and The Shepherd, the artist establised a connection between individual experience of time and public experience through dreams, memories, emotions and other people’s stories, touching on the ultimate topic of life and death in a broader sense.”
