Cho Miyoung (b. Seoul, 1974) graduated from Hong-Ik University in 1997 and in 2002 with master’s degree. She currently lives and works in Seoul. Her work’s primary focus is to decipher the interaction between consciousness and sub-consciousness in the theory of psychoanalysis. Utilizing common everyday objects in our day to day life, Cho presents familiar sceneries through a surreal approach, enabling its viewers to comfortably situate themselves in a dream-like, imaginary world. In “The Island” series, the islands represent the state of mind of the artist as they record her senses while she is lost in a continuous overlap of consciousness and sub-consciousness. Cho’s mirroring sculptural work connects either end of the two where the overlaid boundary remains an ambiguous zone; it is both an implication that the human sub-consciousness still dominates over cognition, as well as an analogy of the enigmatic relationship of the human consciousness and sensory that constantly shifts within oneself.
