Cai Lei (b. 1983, Jilin) graduated from the Sculpture Department of China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2009 and with master’s degree in 2015. He currently lives and works in Beijing. Cai Lei’s work is rooted in the theme of “multi-significance” of visual concept. “Multi-significance” indicates the many layers of connotation that are ambiguous in nature, illustrating the multiplicity of significance and sensibility. He breaks away from the preconceived notions of sculpture with materials and concepts, and aptly utilizes the visual techniques of displacement and illusion to explore the makeup of space and structure, interpreting the somewhat distorted yet fascinating experience: what appears to be real but is in fact a fictional image conveys his unique artistic language.
