A+ Contemporary will participate in video section of Nanjing Art Fair International to present a series of works by artists Luo Kai and Bo Wang. Mainly in the form of film, video, installation and documentation, the two artists explore the dialectical and reflective relationship on the body, sports and mechanism in the industries of sport game and athletic competition, which shapes the functions and conceptions of human physiology and mentality.
Luo Kai’s work series Male Fitness Research is a part of his art project Masculinity Research Institute, focusing on the concept of the ideal physique constructed by fitness equipment, athletic activities and pharmaceutical products. With the establishment of capitalism and the development of leisure time in the nineteenth century, fitness or bodybuilding shaped the identity of men. It also consolidated and alienated the connection of social relations. This series of works integrates personal experience with a renovation to criticize the “Hegemony” as a standard of conventional masculinity.
Based on the stories of two generations of tennis players, Bo Wang’s filming work The Orbit as two-channel video builds a complex field that combines mechanized training system with personal psychology and perception. The artist attempts to respond to the production, consumption, and regeneration of individuals inside a huge circle setting by massive systems, and the struggle of the individual on the way to break out.

Luo Kai was born in 1994 in Yunnan. He graduated from the School of Art and Design, Yunnan University in Second Studio of Painting with BA in 2017. He currently studies in Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University for Master degree. He currently lives and works in Shanghai. Bo Wang was born in Chongqing, China. He graduated with BS in Physics and Mathematics from Tsinghua University in 2004, with MS in Physics from Tsinghua University in 2007, and with MFA in Photography, Video and Related Media from School of Visual Arts in 2011. He currently works and lives between New York and China, and teaches at School of Visual Art. His solo exhibitions include: Song for the Dreamless (Yell Space, Shanghai, 2019), Heteroscapes (Lianzhou International Photo Festival, Guangdong, 2011), Heteroscapes (Gallery 456, New York, 2010).
