Artist Mao Chenyu participates in “The Exhibition of Annual of Contemporary Art of China 2017”. Following the trajectory of chronological approach, curator Zhu Qingsheng investigates and examines the progression of Chinese contemporary art in the year of 2017, exhibiting 141 artists’ works and archives featured in the Annual Yearbook.

As an artist, filmmaker and anthropologist, Mao Chenyu probes and explores the interrelations between the lands, surrounding environments, things and people through various field trips and studies. Since 2003, his “paddyfilm” project has been augmented a large scale of researching materials. In 2012, Paddy Farm has been launched. Focusing on the agricultural and planting activities, the project reinvestigates the current circumstances and the associations between Chinese agricultural landscapes and the natural environments through the medium of texts, films, paintings and installations. As Mao Chenyu said: “paddyfilm records the real lives of the rice planters.” With an attempt to rethink the current political ideologies, Mao Chenyu’s works remind us once again the agricultural heritage of this land.

About artist

Mao Chenyu was born in 1976 in Hunan. Having studied Inorganic Nonmetallic Materials at School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tongji University during 1996-2000, he currently lives and works in Shanghai. His work won the New Asian Currents Special Award of the 11th Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival in 2009 and was granted the Jury Award of Yunnan Multiculture Visual Festival in 2010.
